Hear an update from three 2025 award recipients - Angella Carney, Blake Cooper and Maclaine Stuart.

Angella Carney

Thank you again to you and the Legion of Rowers for your generous support of my U19 campaign. It was an unforgettable experience that taught me a lot.

Since then, I have raced a club season with Waikato Rowing Club, where I placed second in the senior double, quad and eight at nationals. I definitely found club rowing very different to school programs, but I ultimately really enjoyed the high standard of training and racing. I was then selected into the U22 team to race at the recent Oceania Teams Champs. With this campaign, we travelled an hour inland of Brisbane to Lake Wyaralong to race as a North Island team against the Australian State teams and the South Island. This was a great experience, coming away with some very exciting results, placing 1st in the single and eight and 2nd in the four. The North Island also won the overall points trophy (formerly the U21 trophy), something that hasn't been done by a New Zealand team in several years.

Next, I am heading over to the UK for 6 weeks to row for Tideway Scullers before beginning university at Duke University in the US in August on a rowing scholarship

Blake Cooper

Recently I was selected for the u22 north Island team to complete in the Oceania u22 team championships. Where we versed the Australian states and south Island intimately coming away with a gold in the eight, sliver in the four and 4th in the pair. Going forwards I am planning of rowing again this summer and trying to get onto the senior podium and most likely going for u22s again next year.

In terms of study I am studying first year biomedical science with the goal of making it into medicine.

Maclaine Stuart

Maclaine Stuart competed for Waikato Rowing Club this past season. This year, she has continued rowing and is heading over to England this summer to row at the Henley Royal Regatta for a UK Club. Following this, she will come home and then head to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas to begin a 4-year undergraduate degree in business.

Being able to attend Junior World Champs in Lithuania last year has opened up many of these opportunities for me and I can’t wait to continue rowing and academic journey overseas.
